My 3 Secrets For Getting Out of A Creative Rut

Have you been feeling stuck? Well, there’s some good news-. Every other person who has found themselves in a creative rut, just like you, has the ability to transform and change that.

If you’re looking to get inspired, you’ve come to the right place. I’m not an expert, but I’m here to share 3 secrets that have helped pull me out of a creative rut.

JUST START

There is no lack of ideas when it comes to being an artist. If you looked through my camera roll, pinterest or saved photos on Instagram, you would find thousands of things that have inspired ideas for projects. We all have things we want to do, but sometimes fail to do them. My first secret is - just start. Seems simple right? Yet so many people get caught in excuses.

STOP MAKING A TO-DO LIST OF EXCUSES

An excuse I used to use a lot when I first got starting out in photography and directing was that I wasn’t inspired. Stop making a to-do list of excuses not to do something.  Let’s start my next secret with demystifying that idea that ‘inspiration comes to us’, because it doesn’t. We have to open ourselves up to be inspired. When our day to day isn’t giving us the inspiration or content ideas we need, we have to start looking elsewhere, listen to a podcast, read a book or whatever it may be that gets you excited again. Start believing that action can lead to inspiration, not the other way around and you’ll find yourself starting to make your next project a reality.

Remember that your thoughts affect your actions, if you still think you need inspiration to start acting rely on your five senses to bring you inspiration. When you open yourself up to being inspired, everything around you becomes potential inspiration.

SEEK OUT A COMMUNITY

Lastly, seek out a community. Being a part of a community and having conversions with others gets me not only excited to talk about my ideas, but supports me and keeps me accountable.

Don’t stand around twiddling your thumbs waiting to get inspired. I hope this leaves you with more access to inspiration, so much even that you’ll find yourself swimming in it.
